‘Impasto’ by Philip Compton Farquharson
Saturday, November 28, 2015 @ 10:30 am - Friday, December 18, 2015 @ 4:00 pm
We are delighted to be hosting an exhibition by Olney-based artist, Philip Compton Farquharson. Philip comes from an Art Historical background, having studied Art History at University up to postgraduate level (focussing on ethnographic material in the Andes, Amazonia and Oceania). These studies, combined with his love of travel, have influenced his paintings, both in subject-matter and style. The paintings are from countries he has visited, and he tries to encapsulate an aura, an impression of the place.
Philip loves to paint street scenes and landscapes, frequently with figures placed in off-centre positions to add movement and direction to the image. The paintings are oil on recycled cardboard, applied thickly (using the unusual medium of plastic plant labels instead of a brush) to create an impasto style, quite particular to the artist.
Although he has always painted, Philip has never tried to display or distribute his art until now. This year he had had two paintings shortlisted by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and two others shortlisted by the National Open Art Competition 2015, one of which has been selected for exhibit at the Royal College of Arts.
Philip’s paintings are located in private houses, castles and palaces across the UK, Venezuela and Arabia (Saudi Arabia and Yemen). Framed, and signed, limited edition prints are available on all paintings exhibited upon request and at the Three Hares Gallery.
