Museums at Night – Open Garden
Friday, May 13, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Enjoy a Friday evening stroll in Olney around the Museum’s walled flower and vegetable gardens. The flower garden is of significant horticultural interest and is planted only with specimens introduced to England before 1800, with very few exceptions. The Summer House garden is planted and maintained as a Victorian-style vegetable garden by the tenant with many old varieties of vegetables.
At the top of the garden, visit the “bouderie”, the Summer House where the 18th Century poet William Cowper wrote much of his work. With views of Olney’s spired parish church, it is not difficult to imagine Cowper and his friend John Newton meeting in the gardens and penning many of the Olney hymns.
