Inspiration – by Rob Preece and Lea Sapsford

The Three Hares Gallery
Rob and Lea chose the word ‘inspiration’ for the title of this exhibition because it is the one word that runs through both of their art experiences. Rob was inspired by what he saw one day, and just felt the need to record it in his own way and through his own eyes. Quite what triggered that desire he does not know to this day, but it has been a fascinating journey over a few years, and he is not finished yet.
Once Rob had started painting and reading painting books and guides, he soon realised that one of the most important things for an artist to do is to look at and study other artists’ work. With his friend, Lea, who is responsible in part for Rob’s continuing art journey, and with her help and encouragement, Rob has visited many exhibitions and talked to many artists. He found that most of the artists he met were full of encouragement to keep going, even when you think what you are doing is rubbish. Just start over, keep trying and your ability will improve. Having that raw talent for art is not essential; you can learn to draw and paint – it just takes a little longer if you are not born to it.
Rob met Lea soon after he started painting and she has been a real inspiration to him, helping him with the technicalities of different mediums and really providing him with a shortcut to a lot of knowledge that, on his own, he would have taken years to acquire.
This exhibition is an opportunity for both Rob and Lea to display their work and the aim is to bring pleasure to those viewing it, but, more importantly, to hopefully inspire others to take up art.
This is not an exhibition of great art or a display of their best work. It is all about their art journeys, from knowing nothing about art and observing very little to getting a great deal of pleasure from turning their new-found observation skills into pieces of art. If the observer can see the effort they have put into it and appreciate the pleasure it has given them, then it has been a success. If it gives others pleasure or inspiration, then that is a bonus.
