Cowper’s literary works are still thoroughly enjoyed all over the world. Join us in celebrating the arrival of William Cowper to our beautiful Georgian town. Let us whet your appetite to delve into the delights of his observations of 18th century life long, through his poetry and letters. Return again and again to his home in Orchard Side, the site of our museum today, for within the 18th century rooms you will discover all sorts of treasures which once belonged to Cowper, carefully preserved by our Conservation and Collections volunteers.
Cowper’s dear friend, John Newton, played an important part in the history of Olney with his poignant sermon preached in 1773, now famously known as the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’. Newton’s subsequent involvement in the abolition of the Slave Trade can be discovered in the Olney History Room.
